“If you call one wolf, you invite the pack”

« on: Mar 17, 2009, 10:12, PM »

I understand that there are and were specific patterns and designs for the various types of lodges, but is an original design or hybrid considered not correct?

Let me explain. As many of you know, I sewed my own pyramid last winter. I quickly realized the major downfall to this design is that there is actually no roof area at all. Even with the front flaps closed there is  little to no protection from above.

Rather than scrap my hand sewn wonder, I have decided to sew the flaps closed and place that seam to the back. Entrance will be gained through a round "port" in the panel that is now the back and will be the new front. Very similar to a tipi with a roll up flap to act as a door. The port will be round due to the fact that a circle can be pulled in all directions without wrinkles or ripples.

My pyramid will also be supported with a skeleton frame of four internal poles located where the panels meet rather than a single pole in the center. More or less a tipi with a square footprint rather than round.

Would this be accepted or would I politely be asked not to set it up again?

as it is

I ain't got no problem with that design (though I don't see the advantage of your planned frame)...

The responses from Pa & Walking Eagle are EXACTLY the reason I am so glad that we joined Hidden-Prairie as members! I don't think that I would've enjoyed this type of lifestyle if something like this wasn't allowed. Though I realize that keeping things "period correct" is a way of preserving the history of that time, the people that lived back then did modify existing designs to make them better/easier. If something like this had occurred to them (who knows, maybe it did), they wouldn't hesitate to change what was already being used.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that even if something like this hadn't existed, Wolf is still keeping with the "period correct" spirit of those who lived in that era. I think that is precisely what is missing for those clubs that would be too strict to allow something like this. They've got no SPIRIT!!

BTW Wolf, I think it looks great! I have to agree with Pa, though...The yellow stripe has to go.

I ain't got no problem with that design (though I don't see the advantage of your planned frame)...

When I pull the corners tight it lifts the center of each panel. By supporting the panels at the edges, I hope to eliminate that problem.

Ok I see that, (I think)..what about a stake loop in the middle of each panel like most pyramids have?

actually if he's got 8 ft on a side he should have two more stake loops ,every 2 feet/ that will help pull out his corners,

If you check out http://www.buckskinning.org/lodge.htm it shows a diagram of a lodge that looks remarkably like the one you made...I would say that makes it acceptable.

If you read the text, it says a pyramid is not period correct...We have no problem with it though...I thought that had been established already above..;9)

sadly, the lodge pictured above made a wonderful rodent nest this summer. Guess I don't have to worry about this....
